Training and Instruction

In these difficult economic times, all of us have been keeping an eye on our investments.  But what about your equine investment? Are you acquiring top-quality skills and knowledge for your money? The bottom line isn’t just about how much you spend on training/lessons each month, but how effective the training is that you and your horse are receiving?  Are you frustrated that you and/or your horse are not advancing? Is it unclear how to apply what you’re being taught? Are you getting a good value for your training dollar?

Our training programs enable riders and horses to develop a clear skill set; a “portfolio” of skills and knowledge. Everyone talks about “classical dressage”, but we apply the theory in a logical, easy-to-understand progression that can be practically used.  It means no gimmicks or heavy handedness. It also means an equestrian portfolio that becomes the foundation for any future goals.

In developing a client’s training plan, we take into consideration:

  • the horse and rider’s current skill level
  • the horse and rider’s physical capabilities
  • the rider’s goals
  • the client’s budget
  • any extenuating circumstances (i.e. fears from a previous incident, physical issues with either the horse or rider, etc.).

The minimum plan is 4 sessions/month up to a maximum of 20 sessions/month. Sessions can be either a lesson or training session. A client is only billed for lessons or training sessions that actually occur within the month. For example, if a horse can’t be ridden due to lameness, the client isn’t charged for sessions that do not take place.  Even after a client chooses a number of sessions per month, the amount can easily be increased or decreased as needed.

The following are a few of the possible training/lesson plans:

  • Competitive Program: 4 -5 sessions per week which totals 16 to 20 sessions per month. It can be any combination of training or lessons, such as 3 training sessions and 2 lessons per week.  If the focus is more on the rider it can consists of more lessons than training sessions.
  • Moderate Program: 3 sessions a week and 12 sessions per month, such a 2 training sessions and 1 lesson per week.
  • Relaxed or Independent Program:  4 to 8 sessions per month.
  • Young Horse or Retraining Program: To be effective, we recommend at least 16 to 20 sessions per month with a commitment of 90 days.

Trailer-in Lessons:   Available per session or multiple sessions over several consecutive days.  Please inquire about possible overnight accommodations for both horse and rider. $50/session.

Clinics and Offsite Lessons:   Please inquire for rates and available weekend dates. Available in Michigan and out-of-state locations.

Consignment Sales: At WHF we occasionally take horses on consignment that are suitable for adult amateurs or junior riders. We require that the horse be up-to-date on all routine medical care (i.e. vaccines, dental, etc.). We also require a preliminary set of x-rays so that we can market and price the horse accordingly. The cost for a consignment sale is $625.00/month. This includes board, training, advertising and showing the horse to prospective buyers. Once the horse is sold we will also retain a 15% sales commission on the final sales price. Farrier and veterinary services are the responsibility of the owner.

Board: Along with excellent training, we provide a regimented care program offering the best nutrition, experienced staff and a positive environment in which to work and live. Currently, board is priced at $400/month.
